A new review suggests COVID-19 pandemic may remarkably depend on the levels of humidity indoors and outdoors.

As, Prof. Akiko Iwasaki, an immunobiologist at Yale University and his co-authors note, in the transmission of respiratory viral illnesses, seasonal cycles are known to play a key role. There has been research on the link between viral outbreaks and the season. The two main elements that contribute to the link are changes in “environmental parameters and human behavior”.

Particularly variations in temperature and humidity influence how stable and transmissible the viruses are.

Some of the imp points noted by researchers are:

  • Very low humidity levels makes it easier for the airborne viral particles to travel.
  • Too much humidity in the air also supports viral spread.

Studies in mice suggest that humidity levels between 40-60% is ideal for containing virus.

Numerous homes are poorly ventilated and people usually live in close proximity with each other and contaminated surfaces. So, it doesn’t matter where you live, you still need to wash your hands regularly and practice social distancing as precautionary measures.
